Looking for a Fight

Vivian “Rocky” Gutierrez, 16, trains at Unanimous Boxing Gym in early 2019 in Chicago. She often faces criticism for being a competitive woman boxer and because of her age. “Some people think that women just shouldn’t do boxing because they suck or they’re too sensitive, and I’m like you know what? Men and women are very emotional, it just depends. Like, females like showing it, males don’t like showing it because they feel like they’re being weak or showing weakness. Everyone has that part of them,” she said. Unanimous Boxing is like a second family to her, and most of the Chicago boxing community is very supportive. “Everyone cries. They say ‘Blood, sweat and tears’ in boxing, so you know there’s going to be tears.” Gutierrez’s next fight will likely be at the 2019 National Junior Olympics tournament in June in Wisconsin.
