Family members of 26-year-old Ernie Perez, who was shot and killed September 14, including his niece, 4-year-old Melanie Radillo, gather in Ronan Park for a peace march in response to recent gun violence in the area, including the death of Perez, Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020, in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago. There were three shootings in the area the same week that resulted in seven people shot, two fatally, within blocks of each other. Many of the recent shootings have been caused by gang conflicts, according to Chicago police. There have been no arrests. Hours after the marchers went home and businesses closed for the day, an officer in the district called in gunfire over the radio. “Sounds like loud reports east around Lawrence and Central Park area. I’ll start looking around. Ten loud reports.” Officers found shell casings in the 3400 block of West Carmen Avenue in the North Park neighborhood. A 24-year-old man was shot in the hand and in good condition, police later said. A 25-year-old man was shot several times in the head and died.
